Air Reserve Technicians are part of the regular civil service and enjoy all the benefits granted to Federal employees in the competitive civil service. In addition, ARTs are required to maintain active membership in an Air Force Reserve unit so long as they occupy Air Reserve Technician positions. As members of reserve units, ARTs receive on average one weekend of military training per month. In addition, they are eligible for 15 days active duty tour each year for which military leave is granted with full civilian pay. Air Force Reserve units and members are subject to immediate call to active duty in mobilization to meet a national emergency.

The primary purpose of this position as an Air Reserve Technician (ART) Aircraft Operations Officer is to manage the total operations of a flying squadron. Incumbent of this position will perform the following duties:
Direct all operations and maintenance training programs for the Squadron.
Implement flying and ground training requirements.
Exercise supervisory personnel management responsibilities.
As required, fly as an instructor/examiner in unit aircraft.
Applicants must qualify for a USAF Pilot Rating, and be currently qualified (within the last 36 months) as an A-10 Airplane Flight Instructor in a flying component of a U.S. MILITARY ESTABLISHMENT. (Active Duty or Reserve)
Flying Hours Required:
Aircraft Operations Officer, GS-14
Must have logged 2,000 hours total pilot time, or 1,300 hours First Pilot/Instructor Pilot time in a military fixed-wing aircraft. Must be currently instructor qualified in the A-10 aircraft.
NOTE: Flying hours logged as student pilot are creditable. Flying hours in fighter/training aircraft will be given two-for-one credit by the examining office (Student hours will not be doubled).
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Position may or will require incumbent to: (1) Formulate, determine or influence policies of the assigned units. (2) Be a fully qualified, mission-ready, rated pilot aircrew member on flying status in unit to which assigned. Must participate in regular and frequent flights as required by the supervisor, over and above the flying necessitated by the position. Must have been previously flight examiner qualified. Periodically, as prescribed by regulations, must take and pass standardization/evaluation flight examinations which are written tests and also actual flight performance to demonstrate flight knowledge and abilities required of the position. (3) Be subject to the normal pressures, deadlines and other conditions inherent in this position and others found in the aircrew occupation. Also, as appropriate, may be exposed to gravity forces of three to seven depending upon aircraft to which assigned. (4) As necessary, to meet special or essential unscheduled flying missions, may be required to work an uncommon tour of duty with brief advance notice. (5) Meet and maintain Air Force Reserve military requirements. Work schedule will be aligned to allow the incumbent to fully participate in unit training assemblies. Incumbent's regular assignments are primarily ART duties; however, the incumbent may be assigned some non-ART duties, generally not to exceed 30 percent of total responsibilities. (6) If you are selected for an ART Officer position, you will be required to sign a mobility agreement prior to appointment. (7) Position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position. (8) Position may be designated for drug testing. Therefore, incumbent may be subject to random testing for drug use. (9) A background security investigation to determine suitability for employment and/or a security clearance. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
